UNIT 20

Stages in a journey

Prefixed verbs of motion

In Units 14 and 17 we looked at the usage of some prefixed verbs of motion when asking for and giving directions (, ) and describing a series of completed actions in a journey (). In this unit we look at prefixed verbs of motion in more detail.

Whereas in English speakers usually use a variety of unrelated verbs to indicate the different stages of a journey (to leave, be on the road, arrive, etc.), Russian essentially uses the same verb but with a variety of prefixes, each of which indicates which part of the journey the speaker is referring to. Thus, for example, the prefix signifies ‘arriving’, so that means ‘we arrived’.

Prefixed verbs of motion behave in exactly the same way as other Russian verbs: they have an imperfective and perfective aspect. Unlike non-prefixed verbs of motion, they do not have two imperfective forms, the so-called non-determinate and determinate forms (also referred to as unidirectional and multidirectional; see Basic Russian, Unit 26), such as or , where both pairs are imperfective.

In this unit we look only at the formation and use of some prefixed verbs of motion derived from and .
